Design System Documentation
Visual Refresh
February 2025 - June 2025

Dim Sum is the name of Meta’s internal documentation page for design system teams across Meta. Geodesic is the name of the design system team of the Ads tools, comprised of both a brand design and product design team.

As the product designer on the project refreshed the IA to match industry standards, I was simultaneously tasked with leading the charge on refreshing the illustrations as part of the design system documentation refresh. Over the course three months, I art directed external illustrators to deliver 54 total illustrations.

Process

Although my original scope was limited to illustration, I provided feedback on the overall IA as well. The product designer was new to the team and did not have the context of how the visual systems team related to the product design team within the Ads org specifically. I provided my observations, which were integrated in the final structuring prior to kicking off illustration art direction.

After the IA was finalized on its restructuring, I read through the content to determine a couple of things:

  • What types of illustrations would best communicate the information i.e. hero vs. infographic?

  • How should each type of illustration be communicated i.e. richer vs. more tactical?

  • What illustrator would best be able to execute each type of illustration?

  • Which assets needed deep internal context to execute and should be delegated to an internal employee?

Once I had answered these questions for myself, I created briefs for each of our external vendors.

As I was working on the UI set of illustrations, I felt like there was an opportunity to further differentiate the foundations category from the more granular components + patterns. Above shows the full process of creating the two separate UI illustration types. The below is the inspiration I shared to help the illustrator parse out the two into different categories.

Final Deliverables

To close out the project, I delivered a total of 54 illustrations and made 7 of the final deliverables myself.

  • 6 hero illustrations

  • 28 medium illustrations

  • 15 UI illustrations

  • 5 infographics
